Review: Wenger

Fifty Sense Seal of Approval In 1893 at Delémont in the Canton of Bern, in Switzerland, the industrial cutlery house of Paul Boéchat & Cie received a contract from the Swiss Army to produce a single blade knife with a screw driver head to adjust their rifles. Victorinox had begun producing these knives in 1890. In 1898, Theodore Wenger was hired to be its manager and later renamed the company Wenger & Co. S.A..

In 1908 the Swiss Army decided to split the contract, with half of the order going to Victorinox, in the German-speaking canton of Schwyz, and the other half to Wenger in the French-speaking part of the canton of Bern. They claim they did this in the interest of national harmony, but they may also have been interested in fostering competitive pricing. Thus the confusion about "Genuine"(Wenger) and "Original"(Victorinox) Swiss Army knives.

Wenger also produces kitchen knives under the brand names of SWIBO and Grand-MaƮtre and scissors under the Swissors name and began producing watches in 1988. In North America, licensed products using the Wenger and SwissGear trademarks are owned independently from Victorinox SA, and are used to market camping equipment (particularly tents, backpacks and sleeping bags), luggage, backpacks and office/business needs.

Soft Touch Nail Clipper

Wenger, maker of GENUINE Swiss Army Knives has incorporated its popular EvoGrip and Soft Touch styles into handy and travel friendly Swiss Army Knife Clipper Tools. Even though small in size, all the implements were easy to open. Each clipper is manufactured in Switzerland and features a lifetime warranty.

Boasting the same must have tools as the original Clipper - the Soft Touch version ($38.95) has a comfy neoprene coating, and "seven implements for eight functions" - like a stainless steel nail clipper, equipped with a tool deployment mechanism for easy, safe opening, a 1.8" springless scissor with serrated, self-sharpening design, nail file and nail cleaner, toothpick, tweezers, a key ring and a 1.75" pen blade.
