Alpine Skiing: Getting Started

Sue Williams with Skiing Caution sign

The Alpine ski industry realizes that the Baby Boomers would like to get back into skiing but are nervous remembering how challenging the sport used to be. Consequently, the new equipment and techniques are designed to allow a skier to enjoy the sport the first weekend out!

Because so much has changed, it is important to not only rent the new equipment, but also take a lesson on the new techniques. Once you have done that, the best way to pick out new equipment for yourself is to test several different styles on the slopes. Don't be afraid to tell the salesperson exactly what type of skier you are and how long you expect to keep the equipment. Run fast out of the store if they tell you that you will need new equipment every other year.

Most age advantaged skiers use what they have for many years. At the same time, remember that the retailers are very aware that this is a huge demographic that has money to spend, so be aware of when breakthroughs come about. This sport can definitely be fun after fifty, sixty, seventy, and beyond! Don't forget to stop for breaks when you get tired or the conditions are dangerous. We have nothing to prove anymore!
